Technical Lead Intern — Software Engineering

Our team is developing the TiriVelo Pet Care platform, a Canada-first marketplace connecting pet owners with trusted pet care providers, alongside TiriVelo's broader digital ecosystem.

Overview

We're looking for a Technical Lead Intern — Software Engineering to join the TiriVelo team and help guide the technical development and engineering foundation behind our growing technology platform.

This role is ideal for developers interested in technical leadership, software architecture, mentorship, and product development who are ready to gain hands-on experience in an early-stage startup. Working closely with TiriVelo leadership and our engineering team, you'll contribute to technical decision-making, engineering coordination, system reviews, and active project handoffs while gradually taking on greater technical leadership responsibilities.

This is an unpaid internship focused on gaining real-world experience, contributing to a live technology platform, and developing practical skills in technical leadership and software engineering.

What You’ll Actually Own

  • Provide technical guidance across frontend and backend engineering initiatives.

  • Help coordinate technical decisions across interconnected systems and teams.

  • Review architecture, APIs, database structures, migrations, implementation plans, and engineering approaches.

  • Help translate product requirements and UX/UI designs into achievable technical work.

  • Identify dependencies between frontend, backend, infrastructure, design, and product teams.

  • Participate in code reviews and support engineering quality and consistency.

  • Mentor and support engineering interns as they work through implementation challenges.

  • Help identify technical risks, security concerns, blockers, and technical debt.

  • Maintain technical documentation, architectural decisions, and engineering standards.

  • Support engineering planning, testing, deployment, and release processes.

  • Collaborate with UX/UI and Product Design Quality teams as designs move toward implementation.

  • Contribute hands-on to development when appropriate while balancing technical leadership responsibilities.

Website Migration & Deployment

The Technical Lead will also help guide TiriVelo's evolving web infrastructure and website migration work.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting migrations from existing website/CMS environments into modern Next.js and Cloudflare-based experiences.

  • Reviewing migration and production deployment plans.

  • Coordinating dependencies involving domains, DNS, routing, redirects, hosting, environment variables, APIs, authentication, storage, and third-party integrations.

  • Helping minimize downtime, broken routes, lost functionality, or disruption during production migrations.

  • Supporting pre-launch and post-launch testing across navigation, forms, integrations, responsive layouts, and production configuration.

  • Considering accessibility, metadata, redirects, analytics, and SEO preservation during website migrations.

  • Helping establish rollback/recovery plans for production releases.

  • Documenting infrastructure and deployment processes so critical technical knowledge remains transferable across the Engineering team.

Direct experience migrating Squarespace to Next.js/Cloudflare is not required, but candidates should understand modern website deployment and migration principles.

You do not need to be an expert in every technology listed above. Strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to understand how interconnected systems work together are more important.

Technical Qualifications

  • Supabase or comparable backend/database platforms.

  • PostgreSQL and relational database design.

  • Supabase Authentication, Storage, Realtime, and Row Level Security.

  • Next.js, React, and TypeScript.

  • REST API design, development, and integration.

  • Authentication, authorization, session management, and protected resources.

  • Git/GitHub workflows, pull requests, and code review.

  • Modern frontend and backend application architecture.

  • Web application security, access control, validation, and protection of sensitive information.

  • Database migrations and production data considerations.

  • Debugging across frontend, API, authentication, database, and infrastructure layers.

  • Deployment of modern web applications.

  • Technical documentation and communicating architectural decisions.

Candidates should have experience with several of the following:

Strong Supabase experience is highly preferred. Candidates without direct Supabase experience should demonstrate strong PostgreSQL, backend, authentication, authorization, and API fundamentals and be comfortable becoming proficient with Supabase quickly.

Additional Experience Considered an Asset

Experience with any of the following would be valuable:

  • Cloudflare Pages or comparable hosting platforms.

  • Website/CMS migrations.

  • DNS and domain management.

  • Production deployment of Next.js applications.

  • Redirect mapping and SEO-conscious migrations.

  • CI/CD and automated testing.

  • Stripe and Stripe Connect.

  • Marketplace, booking, messaging, notification, or payment systems.

  • OpenAPI and API testing tools such as Bruno or Postman.

  • Secure file storage and signed URLs.

  • Accessibility and responsive web development.

  • Working directly with UX/UI teams and Figma designs.

Structured Leadership Transition

The successful candidate will have a planned transition period working alongside TiriVelo's current Technical Lead.

During this period, you'll:

  • Review TiriVelo's current architecture and engineering environment.

  • Become familiar with active engineering projects and dependencies.

  • Review existing technical and architectural decisions.

  • Learn current development, deployment, and documentation practices.

  • Become familiar with website migration and infrastructure work.

  • Work directly with existing frontend and backend engineers.

  • Participate in current engineering meetings and technical discussions.

  • Gradually assume greater responsibility for technical direction and engineering coordination.

The objective is to provide the incoming Technical Lead with the context, mentorship, and knowledge transfer needed to succeed before taking greater ownership of the role.
